Flyers ink Travis Konecny to a HUGE 8-year contract extension worth $70M

On Thursday afternoon, the Philadelphia Flyers extended forward Travis Konecny to an eight-year, $70 million contract extension (8.75M AAV). Konecny’s new contract is now the largest in Flyers history and will kick in during the 2025-26 season.

Konecny, 27, was entering the final season of his six-year, $33 million contract which carried an AAV of $5.5 million. During the 2023-24 season, he led the Flyers in points with 68 (33G, 35A) in 76 games played. Konecny was the Flyers’ lone All-Star last season, representing the team in Toronto in his second career All-Star appearance.

Flyers finally pay Travis Konecny after months of speculation

Konecny’s potential extension was a hot topic of discussion after the season concluded and there wasn’t certainty as to what would happen. Now, general manager Daniel Briere has his All-Star forward locked up.

“Travis Konecny is an integral part of the fabric of our team and we are thrilled to have him under contract for the long-term,” said Briere in a press release by the organization.

Since being drafted 24th overall by the Flyers in 2015, Konecny has scored 400 points (174G, 226A) in 564 games played, has averaged 16:46 of ice time, and is a -26. The 2023-24 season was a career year for Konecny points-wise. He has been on pace for 75+ points during the last two seasons, but injuries have prevented him from reaching those numbers. He has only played one full 82-game season, which was during 2018-19.

What it means for the Flyers

With the arrival of Matvei Michkov for 2024-25, Travis Konecny will play a pivotal role in helping the Russian forward find his footing in the NHL. Konecny was named to the Flyers’ new leadership group in February as an assistant captain alongside Scott Laughton (A) and Sean Couturier (C).

As the Flyers’ rebuild continues, Travis Konecny is locked in for the long haul and will play a key role in helping shape the next Flyers teams that will compete for the Stanley Cup.
