Flyers Notebook: Briere, Giroux rocking Germany

The Eagles didn’t fire or bench anyone Wednesday. The Phillies are off golfing or drinking at the Pen & Pencil Club, or whatever a non-playoff team does in October. The Sixers are actually hosting a preseason game in South Philly.

Meanwhile, the Flyers … well, two locked-out players — Danny Briere, Claude Giroux — have traveled overseas to teach the Germans how to play hockey. They arrived in Berlin with a lot of hype from the home country, which treated them like the superstars they are. They’ve been living up to the hype ever since.

On Sunday, Danny Briere netted three goals and an assist in a 6-2 win, with Giroux adding three assists. In the tandem’s debut, last Friday night, they combined for six points, with Giroux scoring the game-tying goal.

Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, we have highlights … mute the volume if you don’t enjoy the German language or David Hasselhoff.

Back stateside, the favorite whipping boy of Flyers fans, Sidney Crosby, is running his mouth again. Crosby was responsible for breaking both of Giroux’s wrists in that epic playoff series a season ago. Not surprisingly, The Kid isn’t sorry about it.

“I don’t try to go after his wrists but if I caught it, I’m not sorry for it,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I think it’s hilarious that I hear that stuff from Philly. They’re probably involved in that stuff more than any team in the league …”

In other NHL news, a deal has been proposed to save the 2012-13 season. The owners sent an offer to the players’ union, which details a plan for an 82-game season. It’s a 50/50 split, according to NHL.com. If you want to read the full text of the CBA offer, click here.
