Philadelphia Flyers prospect Spencer Gill signed a three-year entry-level contract with the organization on Friday.
Gill, 18, was drafted 59th overall by the Flyers during the 2024 NHL Draft. The defenseman stood out during Flyers rookie and training camp these last few weeks. On Wednesday, Gill was part of the first round of cuts by the team. He will head back to the Rimouski Océanic of the QMJHL.
During the 2023-24 season with Rimouski, Gill scored 46 points (12G, 34A) and was a +8 in 65 games played. He also represented Canada at the U18 World Junior Championships where he recorded two assists in seven games.
Gill took a major leap in his development with Rimouski last season. In his rookie season in 2022-23, Gill recorded only four assists in 41 games. Heading into 2024-25, Gill will play an even larger role on the blue line.
Coming into Flyers rookie and training camp, Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr knew that Gill had to get stronger, considering his 6’4″ frame and the position he plays. Philly Sports Network’s Haley Taylor Simon spoke with Gill on Sept. 15 to discuss how his first NHL training camp experience was going and the goals that he had in mind for the upcoming season.
Gill played in both of the Flyers’ rookie games against the New York Rangers in September. He recorded an assist on Alexis Gendron’s goal and was noticeable on the defensive side of the ice. He also played in the Flyers’ 6-2 preseason win over the Washington Capitals last Sunday, recording 19:16 of ice time and blocking two shots.
On his way back to the QMJHL with some NHL training camp experience under his belt, Gill is ready to put in the work with Rimouski.
