The Flyers had a whole day to relish that big win over the Islanders.
Now, that’s all ancient history as they prep for a trek across the state to tango with their heated rivals, the Penguins.
Everyone is hoping Monday’s victory at least gave the Orange and Black some much-needed momentum.
“You have to bottle it up and carry it right into Pitt,” coach Peter Laviolette said after Monday’s 7-0 rout in New York.
The Flyers are 2-3 on their season-long, six-game road trip, which ends tonight in Pittsburgh. For the year, they own a dismal 3-8 record on the road. Meanwhile, the Penguins are clicking on all cylinders and boast the best record in the Eastern Conference.
“We win tomorrow, we come back a game under .500,” Laviolette said. “Offensively, we’ve got to put our foot on the gas pedal now.”
Maybe a trip to CONSOL Energy Center, an arena the Flyers have gone 5-1 in (regular season) since it opened, can fix their recent woes. The Penguins are 8-2-0 on the road this season, while going just 3-3 at home.
“That’s how we gotta play, a full 60 minutes,” said captain Claude Giroux, who has eight goals and seven assists in his last eight games in Pittsburgh, including the playoffs. “We didn’t let down and it showed.”
