Flyers sign Streit, interested in Bernier

Bernier, a restricted free agent this summer, is arguably the best young goaltender on the market.

Mark Streit has agreed on a four-year contract extension with the Flyers, five days after the Orange and Black traded for his rights. The deal is worth a reported $21 million with an average annual cap hit of $5.25 million.

The Flyers can’t make the deal official until the trim their salary cap, according to CSNPhilly.com, likely by exercising an amnesty buyout on Danny Briere. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is also a candidate, but the team would likely hold onto him until they can negotiate a trade for another goaltender.

“We continue to have talks with Mark’s agent. Although there is nothing to report, we remain confident that we will get something done,” GM Paul Holmgren said in a statement.

The Flyers gave up prospect Shane Harper and a fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft to obtain Streit. The 35-year-old defenseman played for the New York Islanders last season, leading them in scoring with 27 points.
Report: Orange and Black pushing for Bernier
The Flyers’ annual search for a goaltender has officially started. The team is reportedly making a push to acquire Kings backup Jonathan Bernier, according to several media outlets. One reporter claims they are a front-runner to sign Bernier. The 24-year-old has played in 62 games with a 2.36 goals-against average and .932 save percentage. Many consider Bernier, a restricted free agent this summer, the best young goalie on the market.
