The Philadelphia Flyers have a hefty schedule this week and it continues tonight against the Detroit Red Wings. The previous meeting between both teams was on March 22, 2022, and the Red Wings were victorious, 6-3.
After a dominant win against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, the Flyers came out flat and couldn’t keep up with the Chicago Blackhawks:
“I think it’s the mental tiredness that we have to fight. I think that’s the first thing that goes. I thought we were flat mentally. We weren’t quick. They checked going forward. We just weren’t anticipating.”
John Tortorella; 1/19/2023
The Red Wings are just one point ahead of the Flyers in the standings for the second wild-card spot, and both teams will be doing whatever it takes to get two points tonight. Tonight’s game is the first of three between both teams this season. The next two meetings are on March 5 and March 25. Both will be played at the Wells Fargo Center.
In their most recent game on Thursday, the Red Wings defeated the Vegas Golden Knights, 3-2. They snapped a three-game skid against one of the top teams in the Western Conference.
Lucas Raymond has five points (3G, 2A) in his last five games. In his second NHL season, the 20-year-old Swede has 31 points (14G, 17A) in 44 games played. Raymond is a key part of Detroit’s future, playing top-line minutes alongside Dominik Kubalik and Dylan Larkin. He lit the lamp in the victory over the Golden Knights.
Moritz Seider, the 2021-2022 Calder Trophy winner, is having a sophomore slump. The German defenseman has 20 points (3G, 17A) in 44 games, alongside a -14 plus/minus, which is the second-worst on the roster. Despite struggles this year offensively, Seider is still a physical element on the blue line, standing 6’4″, 203lbs.
Here’s the tentative lineup for the Red Wings, per Ansar Khan:
Kubalik-Larkin-Raymond
Rasmussen-Copp-Perron
Erne-Suter-Fabbri
Berggren-Veleno-Sundqvist
Walman-Seider
Chiarot-Hronek
Maatta-Oesterle
Husso
(Hellberg)
Morgan Frost (10G, 12A) was the Flyers’ lone goal scorer on Thursday. Scoring in two consecutive games, Frost is coming into his own as an NHL player. He’s being trusted in more situations by John Tortorella and is showing more confidence, which is contributing to offensive creativity.
Samuel Ersson returns to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. He is protected from waivers and will play a lot more in the AHL. Felix Sandstrom is recalled to back up Carter Hart. Tonight, Hart (13-14-6, 3.0GAA, 90.7%SV) is the likely starter.
Kevin Hayes (13G, 27A) had a hat trick versus the Ducks. He didn’t register a point versus the Blackhawks but put nine shots on goal. The 2023 NHL All-Star is due for a contribution on a scoring play tonight.
Here’s the tentative lineup for the Flyers:
van Riemsdyk-Frost-Tippett
Farabee-Cates-Konecny
Hayes-Laughton-Allison
Deslauriers-Brown-MacEwen
Provorov-York
Sanheim-DeAngelo
Seeler-Ristolainen
Hart
(Sandstrom)
Philadelphia Flyers moneyline (+120)
Detroit Red Wings moneyline (-140)
Morgan Frost over 0.5 points (+130)
Lucas Raymond over 0.5 points (-130)
