Flyers vs. Jets: 3 things we saw

1. Don’t call it a comeback.

The Flyers were brutal for a period and a half, digging a 6-2 deficit as a result of careless play in their own end and ragged goaltending from starter Sergei Bobrovsky.

Then they stormed back with five unanswered goals in an 8:51 span — two by Danny Briere — to go ahead 7-6 only to see the Jets counter with two 61 seconds apart to regain the lead. James van Riemsdyk’s second goal of the night tied it again late in the third, before a late defensive breakdown led to Andrew Ladds’ game-winner against Ilya Bryzgalov with 1:06 left.

2. Control the puck.

The Flyers seem to be taking a page right out of the Eagles’ playbook —plenty of turnovers and poor defense, especially close to the goal. But you can’t blame Juan Castillo this time.

Peter Laviolette’s club has been turning the puck over at an alarming rate in its own zone, creating plenty of scoring chances for the opposition.

And they’ve done a terrible job keeping the puck out of the net, allowing an alarming 25 goals in the last five games while going 1-4. After starting off 4-0-1 Laviolette needs to do a better job putting his team in position.

3. New name. Same game.

The franchise may now be playing in Winnipeg rather than Atlanta — and called the Jets rather than the Thrashers — but still seem to have the Flyers’ number.

Last year, the Flyers went 0-2-2 against them and have gone just 1-6-2 since 2009. Prior to that, Philadelphia won 14 straight in a six-year span. Next up for the Flyers is Carolina this weekend.
