Foles still preparing like the starter

Nick Foles will be the Eagles’ backup quarterback for the 2013 campaign.

There are two sides to every story — especially when there is a winner and a loser.

On the day Nick Foles learned he wouldn’t be the Eagles’ starting quarterback, he was surprisingly confident. He lost this competition, but there will be other ones for the 24-year-old.

“I’m going to do anything I can to help [Mike Vick] become the best quarterback possible,” Foles said. “We had a great battle, and Mike did a great job and he’s going to continue to do a great job and I’m going to do anything I can to help him.”

Chip Kelly called Vick and Foles into his office individually Tuesday morning to break the news. The coach reminded Foles that injuries are prevalent in the NFL and he still might get a chance this season. Of course, that statement carries extra weight based on Vick’s history.

“In this league, you better have a couple of quarterbacks ready to go. I mentioned that again to Nick today,” Kelly said. “I think Nick is going to approach it that he’s the starter, because that’s got to be his mentality going into this and prepare like he’s a starter.”

Foles will be running with the twos from now on, in practices and in training camp. In Saturday’s preseason game, he’ll likely be limited to the third quarter. Despite the disappointment, Foles’ mindset won’t change.

“I want to prove I’m a great quarterback,” he said. “My mindset is to become a starter.”
