Former Flyers’ star Jeremy Roenick gets Hockey Hall of Fame nod

Former Philadelphia Flyers forward Jeremy Roenick was one of seven individuals elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Joining Roenick in the Class of 2024 in the player category are Pavel Datsyuk, Shea Weber, Natalie Darwitz, and Krissy Wendell-Pohl. David Poile and Colin Campbell will be inducted in the builder category. The induction ceremony will take place on Nov. 11 in Toronto.

Roenick’s time with the Flyers

On July 2, 2001, Roenick signed a five-year deal with the Flyers worth $37.5 million. Roenick appeared in 216 regular season games during his three seasons and scored 173 points (67G, 106A). In 36 playoff games, Roenick tallied 21 points (7G, 14A).

One of the most electrifying moments that Roenick produced as a Flyer was when he scored the overtime-winning goal during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final against the Toronto Maple Leafs which sent the Flyers to the Eastern Conference Final. On the Nasty Knuckles Podcast, Roenick mentioned that the goal he scored to eliminate the Maple Leafs was his favorite of all time.

During two of his three seasons in Philadelphia, Roenick led the Flyers in points twice. During the 2001-02 season, he scored 67 points (21G, 46A) in 75 games and during 2002-03, he scored 59 points (27G, 32A) in 79 games. He was also named an NHL All-Star each year as a Flyer. In total, Roenick was named an All-Star nine times throughout his career.

In Roenick’s final season with Philadelphia in 2003-04, he scored 47 points (19G, 28A) in 62 games. The Flyers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Final that season by John Tortorella’s Tampa Bay Lightning.

On Aug. 4, 2005, Roenick was traded along with a 2006 3rd-round pick to the Los Angeles Kings for Future Considerations. The trade was made by the Flyers to clear up cap space to sign Peter Forsberg.

A HOF Career

Roenick suited up for a total of 1,363 NHL regular season games and scored 1,216 points (513G, 703A) while playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes (twice), Flyers, Kings, and San Jose Sharks. Roenick scored 100+ points three times in his career, all with the Blackhawks from 1991-1994. In 154 total playoff games, he scored 122 points (53G, 69A).

On the international stage, Roenick played for the United States during the 1998 & 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He won a silver medal with the United States in 2002. In 2010, Roenick was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. He has the fifth most points scored by an American player in NHL history.
