Pat Gillick, the architect of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series championship, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday, along with Roberto Alomar and Bert Blyleven.
Gillick, a left-handed pitcher in college, didn’t find much success as a player. As an executive, he was one of the best. Gillick led four different teams to the postseason, including two world championships in Toronto (1992, 1993) and one in Philadelphia.
Gillick became the 32nd executive elected to the Hall and the first general manager since 1971. In 27 years as a GM, he finished with 20 winning records.
“It was pretty clear my arm wasn’t going to get me to the majors,” Gillick said yesterday. “Then I guess luck took over.”
