Free, healthy meals available for Philadelphia kids this summer

In an effort to ensure that all children have access to free, nutritional meals this summer, Philadelphia officials recently announced the opening of more than 500 child and youth meal sites throughout the city.

“Our Food Services team stepped up and diligently worked to support our students and families throughout the pandemic,” Superintendent William Hite said in a statement. “I’m pleased to know that our team can continue to work with the City of Philadelphia to ensure that our students and families will have access to meals during the summer.”

All children in Philadelphia are eligible and there is no student ID is required for access to meals. New sites are still being added as they are confirmed. The School District of Philadelphia will continue Friday-only distributions at student meal sites, between 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every week at over 100 locations, and Parks & Recreation’s PlayStreets and Nutritional Development Services open meal sites also provide student summer meal distributions, which will still be available.

The summer food program is possible thanks to the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Children and Families and Parks & Recreation, along with the School District of Philadelphia and Nutritional Development Services and community partners.

“I am so grateful for our partners. They have been on the forefront since the beginning of the pandemic and have worked tirelessly to distribute meals. Their commitment has been essential, and their coordination has been so impressive,” said Deputy Mayor of Philadelphia’s Office of Children and Families Cynthia Figuero. “Thank you for serving our City’s children and youth by keeping them well fed this summer.”

A full list and finder of student meals for summer is available at phila.gov/food. Meal distribution days and times vary by site. Families should call ahead to confirm schedules.

Additional resources can also be found by visiting PhillySummerMeals.org or CommunityResourceConnect.org. Individuals may also text “FOOD” or “COMIDA” to 877-877 to find a summer meal site near them.
