Queertoberfest

What you can expect at Queertoberfest is a mixture of classic Oktoberfest fixtures, and also, some fabulous updates. Taking place at Love City Brewing Company from noon to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2, Queertoberfest will feature a German Electro and Techo Dance Party (with pop-up performances by Philly drag legends, Icon Ebony Fierce and Iris Spectre), a pretzel eating contest (plus nuggets available to snack on from Auntie Anne’s), yodeling, traditional Köln-style service of Sure Shot Kölsch and Lovefest Oktoberfest beers along with mocktails and the Brewing Co.’s full menu, plus other food items provided by Mom Mom’s Kitchen. 

Additionally, as a release states, an Oktoberfest/Weimar Cabaret/German Underground Music themed Drag & Burlesque show Extravaganza will be headlined by Philly’s own Eric Jaffe, and a German Opera/Operetta performance co-presented with Opera on Tap: Philadelphia featuring a cast of all local LGBTQ+ opera singers headlined by drag queen and opera singing legend Sapphira Cristal will also take place. SELF(ISH) Philly

Now in its third year, this initiative (started by The Wellness Collective for women) is returning to Philadelphia on Sunday, Oct. 2. The event is meant to kickstart a new wave of health and wellness through the vendors, events and keynote speakers, including Nicole Palmer (going over how to let go of other’s expectations and do what’s best for you), Dr. Nicole Rivera (Biohacking Business and Health), and Iman Blackwell (Claiming Your Crown and Currencies).

As a release states, this year’s SELF(ISH) Philly conference has also welcomed Exhale Spa as their VIP partner. The spa will be providing special spa services and an all day relaxation lounge for the event. Additionally, panels for this year include a women’s health panel on Womb Work, and an additional second panel focusing on grief, hosted by Be Well Philly‘s Laura Brzyski, and featuring grief podcast host, Gianna DeMedio, Philly-based psychotherapist, Majet Reyes, and spiritual medium, Teresa Barnea.

And as always, the conference will also feature an assortment of vendors, with a full list online. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Vue on 50.

Mural Arts Fest

Kicking off this Saturday, Oct. 1 from noon to 4 p.m. in Love Park, Philadelphians will be able to indulge in a day full of free fun, including live art, music, dancing, creativity and The Flavor of Family food truck serving up treats. But, the festival is also here to do some good. According to a release, the event will give back to the residents of Philadelphia and celebrate public art that has beautified the city. Travel by Map will spin dance music from around the world, SpinCo will join the celebration from noon to 2 p.m, through movement in different ways—including hoops and juggling—alongside breakdancing by Hip Hop Fundamentals from 2 to 4 p.m.

This event is part of Mural Arts Month, with the 2022 theme being “A Universe of Possibility.”

Beer on the Pier

This Saturday, Oct. 1, 15 local breweries are coming together for a “fun-raiser” while taking over Cherry Street Pier— and it’s all to help Caring People Alliance celebrate its 90th year of reducing poverty and fighting injustice. As a release states, Caring People Alliance operates Boys & Girls Clubs in three of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods—North, West and South Philly—and offers programming for toddlers through seniors. 100% of the ticket price will support the Boys & Girls Clubs from this event.

Participating breweries (who will be setting up shop from 1 to 5 p.m.) include Evil Genius, Yards, Single Cut, Tired Hands, Ship Bottom, Iron Hill, Love City, Flying Fish, Coastal and more, and every vendor will be offering some of their best brews. The Garden at Cherry Street Pier will be serving up some of their own fare as well.

Additionally, as the release states, The Black Home Brewers Association will be discussing the history of Black breweries in Philadelphia, sampling some Black-owned brews, and hosting a Scavenger Hunt. Hunt participants can win a home brew kit. Tickets ($50) will include a logo beer stein, unlimited tastings from all of the breweries and live music.
