Looking for some fun and unique things to do in Philly this weekend? We’ve got you covered.

Bug Fest at The Academy of Natural Sciences

The Academy‘s annual Bug Fest is set for Aug. 9 and 10, and the two-day festival will feature an array of events that bring guests up close and personal with scientists, artists, educators and of course, bugs. Now in its 18th year, Bug Fest will bring back popular activations like guided bug walks in Logan Square, roach races, education stations and Free Library story times.

Those who walk around the museum will also find ways to observe, ask questions and get face-to-face with various multi-legged creatures of the insect world. Another fan favorite—the Now & Then Marketplace—is also back for its sophomore yearand will be housed in front of the museum and in Aviator Park for all Parkway pedestrians to enjoy.

In addition to the returning favorites, this year’s festival will feature new highlights like an artist visit from Salma Garcia Nolasco and a screening of the documentary ‘Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.’ All daytime events and activities are included with regular admission. A full schedule with times can be found online.

Wellness Activities in Fairmount Park

The Second Saturday of each month this summer has featured a free guided hike, with this week’s finishing off with a Summer Hike and Meditation combo from 10 a.m. to noon (check online for meet-up instructions.) Yoga in the Park is another fan-favorite activity on select Sundays (including Aug. 10.) Held from 10 to 11 a.m. in the expansive green space of East Fairmount Park, the class is led by a rotation of local Tula Yoga instructors. Tula will also host a 9 a.m. class catered towards seniors on those dates as well. All yoga sessions are free in 2025.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Volunteer Days will also be sprinkled throughout the summer at Fairmount Park. A full schedule of meet-ups can be found through the park’s official site.

The Ground / BOTLD Pop-Up

The Ground, a Parisian-inspired, plant-adorned coffee shop opened its first location in the city in 2024. Now with two stops (in Rittenhouse and Norris Square), the concept is setting up shop in BOTLD’s flagship location (at 117 South 13th St.) to bring out some seasonal treats—which will only be available through Labor Day.

Each morning offers a menu of unique beverages and classic French pastries for dine-in and take-out. Think all iced drinks, matcha and espresso lattes (featuring homemade syrups like rose pistachio and cinnamon toast crunch), cold brew topped with foams (including orange creamsicle, strawberry, and chocolate) and bites like almond croissants, vanilla beignets, and coffee cake.

Plus, both venues have co-created a series of limited-edition cocktails using BOTLD’s craft spirits. Guests can sip and hang while seated at BOTLD Midtown’s cozy booths, bar or café tables while also exploring a retail lineup of nearly 100 rare and independent craft spirits from around the world.

Delaware River Waterfront

The waterside section of the city is chock full of events spanning a treasure hunt, fitness classes, workshops, skating excursions and much more.

Spruce Street Harbor Park is always a fan favorite, with food and beverage vendors sprinkled throughout the eclectic oasis, along with colorful lights, comfortable hammocks, floating barges and plenty of space to unwind. Just a short walk away is Summerfest— but this locale mimics a boardwalk with beach-side attractions (in the form of carnival games) a rollerblading rink, and some seasonal treats.

Locals can additionally find art exhibits and seasonal bites at Cherry Street Pier from Philly Tacos and Irv’s Ice Cream. And those itching for some health-based activities can head to Race Street Pier this summer as well. A full schedule of activities can be found online.
