Weaver’s Way Second Annual Philadelphia Grocery Co-op Day
To provide a locally-friendly alternative to Amazon Prime Day, Weaver’s Way is hosting its second annual Grocery Co-Op Day in Philadelphia this Saturday, Oct. 17th. The community co-op is planning on filling its three locations with products from local farmers, makers and artisans so that sales can go back to help boost the local economy. The release states that collectively the 5 area co-ops in Philadelphia support over 500 vendors from within a 100-mile radius of Philadelphia. At Weavers Way Co-op, over 300 local vendors are supplying products to its three stores and one farm market; 100 of those are within Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. In 2020, over $13M was spent by the Co-op on goods from these predominantly small, local businesses. In addition to this Saturday’s event, Weaver’s Way also has ongoing specials for the month of October to help further the mission of supporting local businesses (full details are available online.) Weavers Way Co-op locations in Ambler, Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill will be participating.

Sunset Social Voting Initiative/ Boozy Bake Sale
This weekend, Jordan Salcito, founder and CEO of organic, canned wine brand RAMONA and Branden McRill, the restaurateur behind Fine-Drawn Hospitality (Walnut Street Café, The Post and Sunset Social) are giving Philadelphians a delicious incentive to vote. On Oct. 17th from 3 pm to 6 pm, Sunset Social will be hosting a voter registration drive and boozy bake sale to benefit Vote.org. The event is meant to help register voters and also showcase some of the culinary talents in the city. According to the release, in addition to voter registration and education, guests can enjoy socially distanced mingling, cocktails and bake sale items on Sunset Social’s spacious rooftop. Complimentary cans of RAMONA’s organic wine spritzes will be offered to those participating in the event while supplies last, plus individually wrapped, COVID-19 safe baked goods from various participants and RAMONA-inspired cocktails from world-renowned bartender Ivy Mix will be for sale with 100% of proceeds from all baked goods and cocktails sold directly benefiting Vote.org. Contactless purchases and donations will be available via Spotfund as well.

Friday Night Frights at The Bourse
Every Friday throughout the remainder of October, The Bourse will be hosting Friday Night Frights for all Philadelphians to join in on. The event centers around the showing of the wildly popular Halloween movie “Hocus Pocus” which will be shown on a 16-foot projector. The movie will start at 7 pm, but beforehand and during, guests can also indulge in some themed treats from some of the vendors at the Old City food hall including The Witch’s Cauldron from Scoop DeVille ($5.09/small, $6.02/medium, $7.18/large) featuring black ice cream with oreo; The Hangover Soup from Prescription Chicken ($13 / quart); Sanderson Seltzers (hard seltzers) (3 / $15) and a “Little Children” Sandwich aka the Little Chick, a mini fried chicken sandwich from Freebyrd Chicken. Twilight Tour with the Betsy Ross House
It’s officially spooky season, and that means the city will have some seasonal events taking place centered around some of the creepier but also interesting parts of Philly. According to the release, guests who take the tour with the Betsy Ross House will travel back to Philadelphia in the 1700s and learn about the city’s gruesome history of infection and inoculation. Tour-goers will hear true, macabre tales about bloodletting, smallpox, yellow fever, and other gross experiences while also learning what it was like to live in the ghastly 18th century and discover why Philadelphia was an infectious place to be. Then, to cap off the event, guests will then head into the House for a spooky, shadowy tour. Admission is $10, or guests can truly make a night of it and purchase a “Spooky Twosome” which also includes a round of Mini Golf at Franklin Square Park for $17-$19. The tours take place each Friday in October from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Barnes Art Ball
The arts organization typically hosts a fundraiser every year, but for 2020 the festivities will be taking place in the digital sphere. The Barnes Art Ball will be kicking off this Friday, Oct. 16th at 6 pm, and will feature an evening filled with short performances by internationally renowned art stars and musicians, all of whom have partnered with the Barnes over the years, including Mohamed Bourouissa, Nick Cave, Yinka Shonibare, Pat Steir, Mickalene Thomas, opera countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, and Nick Bockrath of Cage the Elephant. According to the release, throughout the evening, guests will also experience inspiring moments of creativity from Philadelphia-based artists and guests are also invited to dress in creative attire and will be spotlighted during various parts of the celebration. All preregistered guests receive a Barnes Takeout Gift Box, filled with celebratory goodies, including fashionable glasses provided by Zenni. All themes of the event—love, faith, community, and storytelling—are inspired by Elijah Pierce’s new exhibit at the Barnes. After the event is over, guests can also join in on an Instagram Live DJ set by DJ Jazzy Jeff and host Lady B to help keep the party going all night long.
