Fun things to safely do in Philly this weekend

Looking for some fun, unique and safe ways to spend your weekend? In the age of social distancing, Metro has you covered. Philly establishments have come up with inventive ways to have fun this weekend while staying healthy.

“The Winter’s Tale” 

The Phoenix Theatre is presenting a World Premiere re-telling of a classic William Shakespeare work for their latest digital production. The new adaptation of “The Winter’s Tale” is directed by the Phoenix Theatre’s Virtual Artist in Residence Katrina Hall. According to the release, in Hall’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” abandonment, loss, jealousy, and redemption all play out in their time, across the lands of Sicilia and Bohemia. The jealous King Leontes falsely accuses his wife Hermione of infidelity with his best friend, and she dies and then Leontes exiles his newborn daughter, Perdita. With time at the center of this story, audiences pick back up in the story 16 years later, where audiences meet Leontes’ now grown daughter, who was raised by shepherds in her exile and falls in love with the son of Leontes’ former best friend and in Hall’s adaptation, Bohemia becomes a carnival. This online performance runs for three shows on Feb. 19 through 21 and will be streamed live on Zoom and broadcasted on The Phoenix Theatre’s YouTube Channel. Audiences can connect to all performances at the company’s website, and tickets are pay what you can with a suggested donation of $20 per household.

Cabin Fever Fest 

This digital music festival comes from a partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society and The Bluegrass Situation and will take place this weekend, Feb. 20 and 21. According to the release, the shift to a digital experience allows the festival to welcome some incredible global performers such as OKAN and Wesli from Canada; Midnight Skyracer and The Wandering Hearts from the UK; Elephant Sessions from Scotland; and the National Eisteddfod in Wales who shared their Tŷ Gwerin o Bell (which literally translates to Remote Folk House) where three Welsh artists – Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog, Tant, and VRï came into the studio to record their sets with only the crew and one another in attendance. The fourth Welsh artist, Pedair (translates to Four) composed and recorded this song, Cân y Clo (translates to lockdown song) from their homes. Just like The Philadelphia Folk Festival, Cabin Fever Fest will also feature local artists as well as national and international artists and 13 Philadelphia Music Co-op members have been chosen to perform as well. Iron Hill Brewery Girl Scout Cookie and Beer Tasting 

Love cookies and beer? Iron Hill has the tasting for you then. This weekend (Feb. 19 and 20), Philadelphians can taste different samples of beer paired with a Girl Scout Cookie at home or to enjoy while dining in at the Center City eatery. The to-go/virtual tasting option at home comes out to be $20 for two people and includes a mixed 4-pack of Iron Hill beers, tasting cups, and cookies for 2, plus a link to Iron Hill’s exclusive brewer-guided tasting to follow along at home. The pairings include a Russian Imperial Stout paired with Thin Mints, Rising Sun paired with Samoas, Hipster IPA paired with Lemonades and Kryptonite paired with Shortbread Cookies. If you dine in however, you can enjoy a flight of 4 beers with 4 cookies at your table (loyalty club members receive a bonus 5th pairing.) Pairings for the dine-in include a Pig Iron Porter paired with Thin Mints, Vienna Red Lager paired with Samoas, Homestead paired with Lemonades and Pennypacker Pils paired with Trefoils while the bonus pairing is a Dopplebock paired with Tagalong.

The Cabin at Independence Beer Garden

Independence Beer Garden is typically a popular destination when the weather is warmer, but this winter season, Philadelphians can experience the space in an all-new format. The new cabin setups at Independence are heated and feature fires alongside a few menu items that are sure to heat the night up. New specialty dishes and drinks include spiked hot chocolate, spiked apple cider, a French dip, gumbo, and onion soup with more items to be added as the season unfolds. Reservations will be required and can be made through Resy, and hours for this weekend are Friday from 3 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from noon to midnight and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. (additional hours available on Wednesday and Thursday as well.)
