Fun things to safely do in Philly this weekend

Looking for some fun, unique and safe ways to spend your weekend? In the age of social distancing, Metro has you covered. A few Philly establishments have come up with inventive ways to still have fun this weekend while staying healthy.

Musi BYOB “Jew-ish” Dinners

Musi BYOB in Pennsport recently announced their plans for their new “Jew-ish” dinners with several courses all specially designed by Chef Ari Miller and his team. The menu comprises of a bevy of different options including deviled huevos haminados; chopped liver croquettes with buckwheat bowties; apple and honey glazed Jew’s filet with pickled apples and Jerusalem artichokes; Manischewitz-poached apple and walnut frangipane pie; and an added pickle plate add-on. There is also a vegetarian menu option available, and the dinner can be enjoyed for indoor/outdoor dining or take-out as well for a prix-fixe price throughout November.

CraftNOW Create Day

This Saturday, Nov. 7, families can join the city’s “Biggest Free Art Class,” which will include a morning of live video demonstrations highlighting step-by-step directions on how to create seven crafts, including clay monster heads, wooden dragonflies and butterflies, mini mosaics, kites, puppets, Swedish holiday gnomes, and felted soaps. This particular event is ideal for children around elementary school age. In previous years, CraftNOW Create was a daylong, hands-on family-friendly experience at the Kimmel Center. This year, the leadership of CraftNOW found a creative new way to present this popular event to children and their families. Virtual Veteran’s Day Parade & Festival 

Parades in 2020 are not in the cards at this time, however, people can still honor and celebrate the Veteran’s Day Parade this Sunday, Nov. 8, virtually. The event will be kicking off with a Facebook Live “pre-show” at 12:15 p.m., then a broadcast presentation on 6abc at 12:30 p.m., ending with a final virtual salute again on Facebook Live at 1 p.m. The honor of Grand Marshal is awarded to a veteran of a past war or conflict who exemplifies the values of service, patriotism, and valor. This year the organizers of the parade put a call out on social media for nominations and they landed on the first-ever female Grand Marshal—Lieutenant Commander Kristin Leone, RN, BSN. According to the release, the 2020 Grand Marshal will be highlighted during the broadcast of #PhillyVirtualVetParade on the Philadelphia Veterans Parade’s Facebook Live as well as 6abc. Programming for the parade will feature guest appearances from the Philly sports teams and celebrities, interviews with inspiring veterans, pre-taped performances by military bands, messages from local VFW and American Legion groups, and information and resources from area Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) and much more.

Tria Fermentation School

Well-known wine and artisan bite spot, Tria Cafe has decided to launch a virtual classroom to teach all vino lovers and wannabe wine aficionados the ins and outs of fermentation. The classes are sometimes led by Tria Wine Director Lauren Harris but will also feature rising stars of the hospitality industry from local and national acclaim. This week will focus on Beaujolais and those who participate will be able to sample seven examples of Beaujolais ranging from simple to sublime including six reds and one rare white. This class will be lead by David McDuff – longtime Tria friend, wine writer and PA manager for rock star importer, Bowler Wine. The event is $65 per ticket and includes seven 2-oz wine tasting portions in super-cute reusable plastic wine glasses, a Tria Cheese and Snack Box, tasting mat and tasting sheet. The class takes place this Friday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m.

Boyds Pop-Up

Boyds is heading to the burbs, and this weekend Philadelphians can check out everything this new pop-up has to offer. The new storefront just opened up recently in the place of the old Urban Outfitters in Suburban Square and will be open Monday through Saturday with times available for private appointments as well. According to the release, Boyds Pop-Up Shop will feature 8,500 square feet of retail space and will bring curated collections, exceptional services and fourth-generation heritage to the Main Line. Luxury menswear, womenswear and Boyds Beauty offerings will be available for purchase. Boyds style and beauty experts will be available for on-site consultations and personal shopping services upon request. The new pop-up store will be open until the end of January 2021.
