Fun things to safely do this weekend in Philly

Looking for some fun, unique and safe ways to spend your weekend? In the age of social distancing, Metro has you covered. A few Philly establishments have come up with inventive ways to still have fun this weekend while staying healthy.

All ages Master Macaron Class from Gingee Says

13-Year-Old Haverford resident and star of Food Network’s ‘Kids Baking Championship’ Avner Schwartz will be hosting a special class for all to join in on via Zoom this weekend. Schwartz, a self-taught baker made his national television debut as a contestant on Food Network’s hit show on Season 8, and afterward even started his own baking business selling seasonal bakery items, Gingee Says. Now, the culinary whiz will be showing Philadelphians how to step into his shoes with his All Ages Macaron Class. Interested Philadelphians can email  Gingeesays@gmail.com to reserve your spot for this Friday at 11 a.m. The cost is $15 per household. Upon registration and payment, participants will receive an email with a bake along recipe and instructions, an ingredient list and access to the Zoom event. Proceeds from the event will go to directly benefit CHOP’s Covid-19 Relief Fund.

‘Be Kind Rewind’ Exhibit at Paradigm

Paradigm Gallery in Queens Village is launching a new immersive solo exhibit from artist Charles Clary. ‘Be Kind Rewind’ will be presented as a video store installation and will be comprised of 1,000 new paper relief works from Clary’s ongoing VHS series, which are made from vintage VHS slipcovers that Clary sourced from thrift stores and garage sales himself. To make the opening extra special, there will also be a Zoom tour led by Clary himself this Friday at 5:30 p.m. with a live Q&A to follow. Registration for the Zoom tour is available on Eventbrite. The exhibition is available for viewing by appointment only (due to COVID safety protocols) and will also be on view digitally using a 3D tour tool on the Paradigm site as well.

Susan G Komen More Than Pink Virtual Walk

This weekend marks an opportunity to get up and moving for a great cause. The Susan G Komen More Than Pink Virtual Walk is taking place this Sunday, and this fundraising experience is not only a way to get into a healthy activity, it also will directly help save lives and create a world without breast cancer. According to the release, Participants will help raise funds that, through the work of Komen Philadelphia, will allow more lives to be saved today and provide critical support to patients facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic—while also empowering research that will one day ensure every breast cancer diagnosis ends in breast cancer survival. The event will take place this Sunday from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. and will take place in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia’s 15-county service area. PSPCA Adoption Event at Philadelphia Brewing Company 

The Pennsylvania SPCA recently rescued 100 cats, and in doing so has reached what they call ‘catpacity.’ To help, the organization has decided to host an in-person adoption event to help find these furry friends a forever home at Philadelphia Brewing Company this weekend. North Shore Animal League America will be sending its Mobile Adoption Unit, a climate-controlled shelter on wheels to the Fishtown hotspot to run the event, and everyone will also be following safety precautions to ensure that the adoptions run smoothly. All potential adopters are asked to complete the Pennsylvania SPCA’s adoption application on their mobile phones prior to entering the mobile unit, and more safety regulations will be followed to complete the adoption this weekend as well. The event will take place June 27 and 28 from noon to 5 p.m., and $50 will be taken off of adoption fees as well. More information can be found online.

Wawa Welcome America 

Although 2020 does look a bit different, Wawa’s Welcome America celebrations will still be in full swing, but this year, they will just be happening virtually. Starting this Sunday, plenty of digital events will be taking place showcasing musical performances, hands-on activities, learning experiences and much more. At 8:30 a.m. on June 28, the Independence Blue Cross #mindPHL Wellness Corner will be kicking off. This event is the first of six and will be talking about how exercise of any kind can have a profound effect on emotional wellness. Then, at 9 a.m., Philadelphians can partake in Welcome America’s Museum Days featuring virtual tours, access to certain exhibits and interactive activities at the American Swedish Historical Museum, Christ Church Burial Ground, Fort Mifflin on the Delaware and One Liberty Observation Deck. Sunday at 5 p.m. will also kick off Sunday Supper with Chef Walter Staib of City Tavern, who will be demonstrating some recipes showcasing the first celebration of independence and then at 7 p.m. there will be an uplifting gospel celebration with Zak Williams and 1/AKORD hosted by WDAS’ Patty Jackson titled Hymns & Harmonys to end your Sunday night right.
