Girlfriend charged in off-duty Darby cop’s murder claims it was accident

Delaware County DA Jack Whelan announced Tuesday that 27-year-old Tyaina Finch has been charged with first and third-degree murder for Darby Borough police officer Mark Hudson’s death.

Hudson, 26, a four-year veteran of the force, died Saturday after he was fatally shot in his home in Briarcliffe, Pa.

Finch admitted she shot Hudson once in the chest with his own service revolver, a .40-caliber Sig Sauer, after an argument, but details of the shooting are unclear.

On the day Finch killed him, Hudson ate a cinnamon raisin muffin, egg whites and turkey sausage for breakfast, which she cooked for him after he came home from work around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

A few hours later, after Hudson had taken a nap, the couple got into an argument while Hudson was “playing” around with Finch in a sexual manner, she later told police, according to the police report.

Later on Saturday, after Hudson died, Finch told police that while the argument continued with Hudson slapping Finch’s buttocks and grabbing her, she saw their dog Simba pick up Hudson’s service revolver off the floor.

“Ms. Finch stated she took the gun from the dog’s mouth and turned toward the victim stating ‘I asked you to put this’ at which time Ms. Finch stated the gun went off,” the police report says, fatally striking Hudson.

But two days later, Finch contacted police saying she wanted “to tell detectives the truth about this incident,” according to the report.

At that time, Finch described a heated argument with Hudson, in which he pulled her hair, called her a derogatory word, and threatened to kill her, before she picked up his gun and pointed it at him.

“Ms. Finch stated she does not recall pulling the trigger,” the police report states. “Ms. Finch stated the victim’s last words were ‘babe I don’t think I’m going to make it.’”

In recordings of the 911 call Finch placed, released by Whelan, she told a dispatcher, “We need an ambulance, we were playing and he’s a cop … Mark Hudson is a police officer and we were playing and I didn’t know that his gun was right there and it went off and I swear to God.”
