The Nutcracker

A beloved tradition and a great option for a local gift in Philly is seeing the holiday magic come alive with the Philadelphia Ballet’s performance of ‘The Nutcracker.’

The tale of ‘The Nutcracker’ follows Marie and the Prince. Together the duo battle a Mouse King, dance in a glistening snowfall and celebrate in the land of sweets to create a magical journey that looks just as beautiful as it sounds. Every detail is exquisite from the costumes to the sets, and audiences feel as though they are completely transported to another land as the iconic Tchaikovsky score is performed. The show will run from Dec. 9 – 28 at The Academy of Music on the Kimmel Cultural Campus.

Andalusia Historic House, Gardens and Arboretum

Being only 13 miles out of the city in Bucks County, this destination in the past has been sought out by many and will undoubtedly ignite some day trips for those itching to get out of Philly. The 100-acre property is home to more than 800 trees, including nearly 250 unique specimens and cultivars from around the world.

However, one of the most stunning features of the property is the ‘Big House’ that overlooks the waterfront. Placed over five decades ago in 1966 on the Register of Historic Landmarks, the early 19th-century Greek Revival mansion features a monumental columned porch, and still acts as an aesthetic draw for visitors.

Philadelphians can gift their loved ones with a membership that includes many unique perks. Those perks span from admission to open Saturdays, complimentary tickets to public tours including tours inside the ‘Big House,’ and a subscription to ‘The Column,’ Andalusia’s biyearly newsletter. Friends of Andalusia memberships start at $50.

A great local gift in Philly comes in the form of a gift card to either South Bowl, or its sister site in Northern Liberties, North Bowl. Both locations offer an array of activities from arcade games, pinball machines, billiards, bar areas for viewing sports, and menus featuring elevated pub fare (think wood-fired pizzas, burgers, wings, tacos, and a selection of loaded tater tots, salads, and vegetarian options.)
