Police arrested a student who attempted to enter Northeast High School on Wednesday morning with a gun, authorities said.
The weapon was noticed while the teenager’s bookbag was going through an X-ray detector, according to PPD and School District of Philadelphia officials. Law enforcement said an 18-year-old boy was taken into custody, and no one was injured.
Northeast Principal Omar Crowder, in a letter to families, said the school, located on Cottman Avenue in the Rhawnhurst neighborhood, was placed on lockdown for just under an hour.
“Philadelphia PD conducted a sweep of our perimeter and lifted the lockdown order so that we could resume normal operations as soon as it was determined that it was safe to do so,” he wrote.
Authorities did not provide additional information Wednesday about the student or the gun he was allegedly carrying.
Northeast is the district’s largest school, with more than 3,600 students enrolled.
