Head to the MOAR this week to enjoy A Winter’s Ball

This week head to the Museum of the American Revolution in Old City to learn traditional Irish social dances and more at their Winter’s Ball event. 

 

This Tuesday (Jan. 21) from 5 pm to 8 pm Philadelphians will really get into the Celtic spirit with step and join in a traditional Irish ceilidh (kā-lē), a social gathering with dancing and storytelling as part of the MOAR’s History After Hours series. To make the event truly special, visitors are also encouraged to wear their finest ballroom attire⁠—although it is not required. 

 

 

Visitors who head to the Winter’s Ball can also check out the Timoney Irish Dancers perform a blend of traditional and contemporary Irish dances set to festive folk tunes in the Museum’s first-floor rotunda and join in on the 18th-century country dances set to Irish tunes accompanied by costumed living historians in the Museum’s elegant Liberty Hall. Dancers will be in good hands too, the class will be led by Niel De Marino, of the New Jersey-based dance company In Good Company. 

 

More fun will also be happening will go on in the Cross Keys Café with spiked eggnog or hot chocolate, happy hour specials (including an Irish-inspired sandwich featuring corned beef, swiss cheese, and braised cabbage), and a specialty cocktail samples being served of the Hochstadter’s Slow & Low Old Fashioned Cocktail.

 

 

The museum’s latest exhibit, Cost of Revolution: The Life and Death of an Irish Soldier will also feature live readings of works by 18th-century poet Anna Seward. Guests can then explore the exhibit, which according to the release, explores the untold story of Richard St. George, an Irish soldier and artist in the British Army, through more than 100 artifacts, manuscripts, and works of art from Australia, Ireland, England, and the United States, many of which are on display in America for the first time. The exhibition is on display through March 17, 2020.

 

In the coming months, visitors can also look forward to more History After Hours events from MOAR including Black History Untold on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020 and A Revolutionary St. Patrick’s Day on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
