History not on Flyers side as they start digging out of 0-2 deficit

The Flyers have been down 0-2 in a playoff series 18 times in their 49 year history.

Just two times did they win four out of five to advance.

Philly trails the Washington Capitals 0-2 after two pretty lackluster performances in Games 1 and 2 in Washington.

They will have two games at the Wells Fargo Center Monday and Wednesday, and a pair of wins can get them right back on track to tie the series.

But Flyers’ history is against that too. Just three time in their history, when trailing 0-2 and returning home, did Philly win two straight at home to even things up. They’ve also completed that task on the road thrice(in 2010, 1995 and 1977).

Eight of 18 times the Flyers were swept.

The good news is that in three of the last six such instances — with the Flyers at home, down 0-2 in a series — they tied things up at 2-2(in 2010, 2009 and 2006).

Here is a complete look at how the Flyers have faired in playoff series with an 0-2 deficit:

  • 2011: Swept by Bruins in conference semifinals
  • 2010: Lost Stanley Cup Finals in six games to Blackhawks
  • 2010: Beat the Bruins in seven games (were down 0-3)
  • 2009: Lost in six games to Penguins in first round
  • 2008: Lost in five gamesto Penguins in conference finals
  • 2006: Lost in six games to Sabresin first round
  • 2000: Lost in six games to Sabres in first round
  • 1997: Swept by Red Wings in Stanley Cup Finals
  • 1995: Lost in six games to Devils in conference finals
  • 1987: Lost Stanley Cup Finals in seven games to Oilers
  • 1984: Swept by Capitals in first round
  • 1983: Swept by Rangers in first round
  • 1978: Lost in five games to Bruins in conference finals
  • 1977: Swept by Bruins in conference finals
  • 1977: Beat Maple Leafs in six games in first round
  • 1976: Swept by Canadians in conference finals

  • 1969: Swept by Blues in first round
