Hyatt Centric Philadelphia is continuing its ‘Maker Series’ with a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month—and there are some familiar faces behind the latest exhibit.
Philadelphia-based photographer Jaime Alvarez and Chicana painter Marta Sanchez’s new showcase is slated to open at the locale on Thursday, Sept. 25, as part of Hyatt’s continued partnership with InLiquid Art Gallery. The series highlights local artists and creators and has seen creatives like sculptor Peter Cucinelli, painter Marilyn Stubblebine, photographer Stuart Goldenberg and more add their work to the line-up in the past. Alvarez and Sanchez’s showcase specifically will highlight identity, heritage, and the significance of memory and place.
“Jaime Alvarez and Marta Sanchez bring extraordinary perspectives to this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month exhibit,” said Rachel Zimmerman, co-founder and executive director at InLiquid. “Their work speaks to the intersection of memory, heritage, and lived experience, offering viewers a deeply resonant sense of place and cultural narrative.”

Alvarez, who was born in Puerto Rico, utilizes both photography and different types of installations to “capture objects and spaces imbued with human presence.” Sanchez, on the other hand, uses a mixed inspiration source of traditional Mexican folkloric expressions and current social issues to shine through colorful prints and tin paintings.
Locals may have seen Alvarez’s work in sites like Comcast, Drexel University, and the Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin, Texas; and Sanchez’s in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, El Museo del Barrio in New York, The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, “The Cheech” Riverside Museum in California, and more. Sanchez also holds an MFA in Painting from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, and she can also be seen teaching at Saint Joseph’s University and the Woodmere Art Museum, while additionally serving on the board of The Print Center.

Together, as a release describes, their works amplify how personal and cultural histories shape artistic storytelling.
“The vibrant works of Jaime Alvarez and Marta Sanchez are a welcome addition to our Maker Series during Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Hyatt Centric Center City’s Elizabeth Fricke. “Their art exemplifies cultural storytelling through layered narratives and bold perspectives, offering guests an inspiring experience that reflects both heritage and contemporary creativity. This exhibit enhances our space while strengthening our connection to local artists and their communities.”
Philadelphians can get up close and personal with the exhibit through the opening reception, taking place Thursday, Sept. 25, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The evening will feature complimentary light bites from the venue’s restaurant (Patchwork) and pay-as-you-go craft cocktails. Alvarez’s and Sanchez’s works will be available for purchase during the event and post-reception, and the exhibit as a whole will be on view until Nov. 10.
