It’s the end of an era as the iconic Center City Macy’s store, nestled in the historic Wanamaker building, will close later this year, the company announced on Thursday. The 1300 Market Street location has been the home to Macy’s since 2006 and is one of 66 store closures Macy’s announced across the country.
In November 2023, Macy’s announced its plans to close approximately 150 locations across the United States. Many in Philadelphia felt disheartened. Not just about the fate of the Center City department store but thinking back on the longstanding traditions, like the Christmas light show, enjoyed in the building and the future of the Wanamaker organ, the treasure housed within the Wanamaker building.
“This is sad news for many Philadelphians,” said Alba Martinez, Philadephia’s Director of Commerce. “Macy’s, and Wanamakers before it, has been more than just a department store. It has been a beloved part of our city’s cultural fabric, home to treasured traditions like family trips to see the Christmas Light Show and hear the grandeur of the Wanamaker pipe organ. For over a century, this location has been a cornerstone of our city’s identity, and its closing represents a profound change.”
But Martinez’s message was not one of regret, but one of progress, stating that, as Macy’s time in the Wanamaker building came to an end, a new opportunity would be budding for Philadelphia.
“While this marks the end of an era for Philadelphia’s retail landscape, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter,” Martinez said. “One filled with economic opportunity in our evolving real estate market and the promise of revitalization for Market East and Center City as a whole. While this may not be the kind of news we like to hear in our city. This is far from the death of Market Street. In fact, we are in the midst of a revival and rebirth of East Market Street and Philadelphia’s historic first commercial corridor.”
