Instant Analysis: Eagles complete a trio of RFA moves

After it was announced that the Eagles were bringing back Nate Herbig, the team announced two more moves with regards to their restricted free agents. Here is all you need to know:

Players coming back

Nate Herbig

All Nate has done since arriving in Philadelphia is exceed expectations. It’s scary to think that he’s still only 23-years-old and only getting better. Brandon Brooks has retired which means every guard has been pushed up the pecking order. Herbig is one of the most serviceable backups the team has and bringing him back was a no-brainer.

Greg Ward

There was once a time when Greg Ward was a pillar of the teams’ receiving corps. While 2021 saw Ward slip down the rotation, the Eagles have done him a solid and brought the slot wideout back on a cheap deal, securing his short-term future.

This could be a sign that the Eagles are happy with their slot structure, with Ward backing up Watkins. As for Z…that’s another debate entirely.

Andre Chachere

He’s been a perennial special teamer since his arrival, but the Eagles clearly think they have something in the former Colts DB who has experience with Jonathan Gannon. He could be looking to climb the ranks this offseason, but it will be an almighty climb.

Players leaving

Boston Scott

Boston Scott has become a fan favorite over the last three years in Philadelphia, but his time with the Eagles may have come to an end. According to reports, the Eagles will not be tendering Scott, which will make the 26-year-old a free agent.

Scott ran for over 300 yards last year with seven rushing touchdowns, which was second on the team behind Jalen Hurts. Nicknamed the “Giants Killer” Scott’s best games have seemingly come all against the New York Giants. Scott has over 300 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in six games against Big Blue over this three year career.

While there is expectation that the Eagles will try to bring him back on the open market, the emergence of Kenneth Gainwell paired in a backfield with Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard make the RB room extremely crowded.

Alex Singleton

Alex Singleton caught some heavy criticism this season due to the fact that a schematic change worked against him. Despite rising through the ranks under Jim Schwartz and registering a whopping 100 tackles in 2020, 2021 would be a very different story.

He should have no time finding a new home in the NFL as a core special teamer with defensive upside.
