Instant analysis: Eagles trim their roster to 80 ahead of joint practices with Dolphins

Today the Philadelphia Eagles are traveling down south to Miami for their final joint practice sessions of the season with the Dolphins. With the season inching closer and closer, this week will be their last time seeing another team until the season opener in Detroit.

The Eagles will be sharing a field with the Dolphins practice on Wednesday and Thursday before playing them in the preseason finale on Saturday. The two teams find themselves in similar situations. Both teams have good rosters with QB being the biggest question mark. Each team finished with 9 wins in 2021, and looking to take the next step in their respective conferences. This should be a good test for the birds and hopefully can continue the good vibes from this year’s training camp.

Tuesday was also the second of three deadlines to trim the roster down, this time from 85 to 80 players. Shortly following the 4 p.m. deadline, the required moves were announced to meet the target.

Eagles make key roster moves

3 players were waived by the team, all of them being undrafted free agents signed in the offseason.

T Jarrid Williams, who went to Houston and Miami from 2015-2021, was cut for the second time this offseason.

RB DeAndre Torrey attended JUCO at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and later was accepted to North Texas University, as well as playing briefly in the USFL, was signed on August 10th and released less than 2 weeks later.

CB Josh Blackwell, who signed after going undrafted out of Duke, was released as well.

2 players were also moved to the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List.

T/G Brett Toth was placed on the list for the second consecutive season after injuring his knee against the Dallas Cowboys in the Week 18 game. Toth is entering his third season with the team, spending the majority of the time on the practice squad.

TE Tyree Jackson was also placed on the list for the second season in a row. Jackson suffered a fractured bone in his back last training camp, worked his way back but tore his ACL in the same week 18 game against Dallas. He is still recovering but it is possible he could come back at some point late in the season.

The Eagles have another week to get the roster down to 53 men, the final number before the season starts. Unlike years in the past, there is a lot of competition for the bottom roster spots so it will be interesting to see who wins spots after everything is done.
