Every year, the S. 9th Street Italian Market Festival brings unique traditions out for the public to enjoy, and this year will be no different. The very silly, very Philly occasion is set for this Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and will feature plenty of food, fun and fully-loaded flavors.
Taking place throughout the iconic and historic Philadelphia landmark, the Italian Market, locals and visitors will be able to walk through 110 years of history within the venue while also perusing through vendors, trying provincial fare, listening to live music, and partaking in some of the quirky attractions that make this celebration one-of-a-kind.

Some stand-outs to look out for this year—live music will take over the Tavolo Zona at the 9th & Montrose Piazza and the 9th & Christian Street Stage, while the John Marzano Half Ball Tournament will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The latter will be in full swing in the Christopher Columbus Charter Schoolyard at 916 Christian Street, and proceeds benefit the John Marzano Wood Bat Scout League. Teams can register on-site the morning of the event.
The Procession of Saints will also be held on May 18, and the annual tradition starts at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church (712 Montrose Street) and pauses for the Blessing of the Market at 9th and Washington Avenue, before ending at Saint Paul Catholic Church (corner of S. Hutchinson and Christian streets).
The Italian Market Festival will also be flocked with creative vendors offering a mix of local crafts, services, souvenirs, food, drinks and more. Some names to look out for include 1984 Cakes LLC, Annie’s Pooch Pops, Cappuccios Meats, Chocolate Arts & Crafts, DiBrunos, Fusco Water Ice, Hope Caramels, Isgro Pastries, Los Gallos, Milo’s Sweet Tea, Paul Carpenter Art, Two Robbers Spirits Co., The Little Sicilian Truck, Wear Philthy, Stoked Pineapple and plenty more.
And lastly, but most certainly not least, the 30-foot high grease pole will be onsite again both days. Greased with lard, teams will be able to compete for prizes (like meats, cheeses, gift cards and money) by making their way and hanging from the top of the pole—and it’s definitely not as easy as some might think. Teams can register on-site the day of the event.
While in the area, visitors can also pop in to some neighboring locales for a mix of specials. Alice, by Chef Dave Conn (901 Christian St.) has decided to add extended hours in conjunction with the annual South 9th Street Italian Market Festival. On May 17 and 18, Philadelphians can head to the hyper-seasonal and contemporary American restaurant from noon to 5 p.m. for a limited-time takeaway menu.

The offerings span an Aperol Spritz ($15), Peroni ($7), Spaghett ($10) – a “beer spritz” comprised of Aperol, Miller High Life and lemon juice, Rosé ($10/6oz; $15/9oz), Spaghetti & Crabs ($15), and Charcoal-Grilled Wings ($15).
