With two plays running simultaneously in Philadelphia and New York, playwright P. Seth Bauer’s work is certainly getting around. Add to that the recent production of his play “Karma Cookie” by 1812 Productions, and Bauer appears to be the hardest working writer in Philly.
Not true, says the playwright, whose “Early in the Mourning” is currently running at Plays and Players Theatre. “It’s just about saying yes to things,” he says. “I think you have to work with who’s in the room, instead of holding out for something fancy.”
Bauer had to learn that lesson the hard way with “Mourning.” Based on his experience of losing a college friend, the play centers on a middle-age couple dealing with the death of their son. While in New York, it went through a long series of hot and cold interest from big name producers and celebrity actors, but Bauer was left with zero productions, until now.
“More money has been spent on not producing this play than any of my other projects,” says Bauer, laughing. “It was this thing that I poured my heart and soul into, but has never been fully actualized.”
