It’s good to be the boss

It’s hard to argue with results. And Paul Holmgren is getting them.

So the Flyers rewarded their crafty GM with a three-year contract extension before last night’s game against Washington.

Holmgren, now in his sixth year as GM, took over in 2006, following the resignation of Bobby Clarke.

“I’m particularly proud of the job Paul Holmgren has done with our hockey club,” said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider yesterday. “He continuously finds the right opportunities to improve our team and get us closer to our ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup.”

When Holmgren took over, the Flyers were a last-place team. Last year, they came within two games of hoisting the Stanley Cup. In fact, Holmgren-constructed squads have made three straight playoff appearances. This year, the Flyers lead the Eastern Conference in points.

“He’s done a tremendous job,” said Danny Briere, who was the first prized free agent signed by Holmgren. “Even in the way he’s setting up this team for this year, the job he’s done since I’ve been here has been amazing.”
