Jets vs Patriots: NFL Week 3 Betting preview

The New York Jets faced a tough opening game against the San Francisco 49ers and it went as expected. But week 2’s bout against the Titans should’ve afforded them a very winnable matchup. While the Jets did eventually win, it came down to a blown final drive by Will Levis, giving Aaron Rodgers and company a real scare. The defense has been an issue through the opening two games and the play-calling offensively hasn’t been much better. The Jets might be favorites, but this is anything but a simple game.

As for the Patriots, they fell just short of a win over the Seahawks in week 2 having upset the Bengals in the season opener. New England looks rejuvenated under Jerod Mayo. There are still some kinks to work out offensively, but the Pats rank 5th in total defense up to this point and 2nd against the run, giving up just 58 yards per game. Given the Jets’ offensive woes, this is a huge advantage if they can bottle up the explosive Breece Hall.

This game looks closer than the opening line suggests. The Jets have been anything but convincing while the Pats have been in two one-score games, showing real resilience on both sides of the ball.

Why the Jets can win

On paper, this is still the better team. Aaron Rodgers flexed some of his elite finesse last time out and helped lift the Jets to a comeback victory which is bound to instil a sense of confidence in the team. With dangerous targets on the perimeter and an elite running back, New York has plenty of options to pick apart the Patriots’ secondary.

The Pats only rank 20th offensively and the Jets’ defense certainly has untapped potential after a rocky opening two weeks. If this does become a defensive showdown, you have to like the chances of a veteran as talented as Aaron Rodgers to count for more than New England has to offer.

Why the Patriots can win

The Jets have really not looked dangeorus at all so far this season. New England is spreading the ball around well offensively, and their defense is firing on all cylinders. If they can manage the tempo and get Rhamondre Stevenson looks in open space, then they have a real chance of controlling this contest from the opening snap.

The staple of New York over the last few years has been its defense, but even that now seems to be uncertain. The Pats have an opportunity to hit them where it hurts and keep scoring to a minimum while the New York offense continues to focus on being run-heavy against one of the best run-stuffing units in the league.

Jets vs Patriots: NFL Week 3 Betting pick

I actually like the Patriots here. Not only do you get points, but they seem like the more ‘ready’ team going into a short week. The Jets scraped past the Titans and were decimated by the 49ers. New England have a real chance to make a statement here with a win and I like them to do just that.
