One swing from Jimmy Rollins was all it took.
One swing Sunday afternoon helped the Phillies avoid a sweep and end a seven-game losing streak at Citizens Bank Park. Rollins delivered an RBI single as the Phils beat the Giants 4-3 in 12 innings.
John Mayberry Jr. hit two solo home runs, with Chase Utley’s triple plating the other run. Kyle Kendrick (4-8) got the win after throwing 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. He stretched his scoreless streak to 18 2/3 innings. Starter Joe Blanton walked away with a no-decision after giving up three runs on seven hits in eight innings.
The Phillies welcome the Milwaukee Brewers to town today (7:05 p.m.) for a three-game set. While rumors about Cole Hamels and others continue to swirl, the Phillies (42-54) are concentrating on the present. The team isn’t giving up on the season despite trailing the Washington Nationals by 14 games in the NL East and the Atlanta Braves by 10.5 for the last wild-card spot.
“We have the horses now, we’re getting back to full strength and the pitchers have been doing a good job,” Rollins said.
