Juniata shooting leaves man, brother-in-law dead

An argument between a man and his brother-in-law escalated into a shootout Saturday night in Juniata, leaving both men dead, police said.

The deadly shooting occurred just after 8:30 p.m. on the 4000 block of Ormond Street, according to authorities. Both men, ages 61 and 58, died a short time later at Temple University Hospital.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that the 61-year-old man had a domestic dispute with his wife earlier this month. On Saturday night, he drove to his mother-in-law’s house on Ormond Street to speak with her, according to investigators.

At some point, the woman’s brother, the 58-year-old man, went outside to check on his sister, authorities said. Words were exchanged, and the woman allegedly went back inside the house. That’s when the men shot each other, police said.

Authorities have not publicly identified either man.

Following the shooting, the nephew of the 58-year-old man grabbed the gun from under his uncle, according to investigators. Officers detained the nephew, and he was questioned by homicide investigators, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Through Sunday, 377 people had been killed in violence this year across the city, a 20% reduction compared to the same date in 2022, according to PPD data.
