Keep that seat warm, Donovan

It took the Eagles nearly 10 years to bench Donovan McNabb. The Redskins did it in just eight weeks.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan decided to sit McNabb yesterday with less than two minutes left and Washington trailing the Detroit Lions, 31-25. Backup Rex Grossman took over and fumbled after being hit on his first play. The Redskins lost the game, 37-25.

“I thought [Grossman] gave us the best chance to win,” Shanahan said.

McNabb is still the starting quarterback, according to Shanahan.

“When you get benched, you get benched,” said McNabb, who was benched by the Eagles two seasons ago. “You just have to learn from it and move on. I did it then, and I’ll do it now.”

The former Eagle was 17-of-30 for 210 yards with a TD and interception against Detroit. McNabb’s 76 QB rating is his lowest since 1999.
