Kelly names Foles starting quarterback

Eagles backup Nick Foles may have blown his chance at ever starting in the NFL after a disastrous Sunday at the Linc.

Foles to start Sunday in Oakland

The worst kept secret in South Philadelphia is out. Nick Foles will start at quarterback Sunday for the Eagles.

Coach Chip Kelly made the announcement Wednesday after Foles went through two pain-free practices following his return from a concussion.

“Nick is going to be our starting quarterback this week, and he’ll take the reps with the ones this week and we’ll get ready as a team offensively to play for Oakland,” Kelly said. “One of the good things about practicing on Tuesday is you can kind of get a chance to get your eyes on people that have been out, and Nick was out, so Nick did a really good job.”

Matt Barkley will serve as the backup after Kelly ruled Mike Vick out. Vick’s MRI revealed the same hamstring injury, in the same sport, as the one he sustained back on Oct. 6.

“I don’t anticipate Mike being able to play this week,” Kelly said. “There’s nothing new from what happened the last time is how it was explained to me.”

Foles is coming off his worst game as an Eagle, completing just 11-of-29 passes for 80 yards in a 17-3 loss. The quarterback said he reviewed the tape three days ago and is ready to move on.

“I did not play well, but one game never defines me and it never will,” Foles said. “I’m going to continue to work and get better, and that’s what today was for.”
