Kelly, Roseman in complete ‘utopia’

The Eagles waived Phillip Hunt Tuesday to get the roster down to the required 75-player limit.

Chip Kelly is making a list. And he’s checking it twice.

As final roster cuts loom, the Eagles coach has quite a few evaluations left to make. While some have speculated that GM Howie Roseman is calling the shots, Kelly made it clear Tuesday that he has final say on the 53-man roster. That’s not to say he doesn’t respect Roseman’s opinion. In fact, according to Kelly, the two rarely disagree.

“It’s utopia,” Kelly joked. “We’re on the same page in everything. There has not been a decision that’s been made personnel‑wise where I’ve felt one way and he’s [Roseman] felt the other way.”

Kelly and Roseman will have one final game to glean as much as they can from the current roster. Then, it’s off to a padded war room to decide which players take the field in the season opener in Washington. Careers will be made and dreams will be dashed. The buzz word Kelly kept throwing around before practice was versatility.

“I’m not getting into who has obstacles or whatever,” Kelly said. “We’ll play and keep the best guys, but when you talk about backup guys, they have to have versatility.”

Kelly will give the team two days off after Thursday night’s game against the Jets. On Saturday, final cuts will be turned into the league office. They’ll have a few light practices, then the Redskins’ game plan will be installed next Wednesday.

“You temper as you get closer to game day,” he said. “That’s a consistent message in terms of how you want to do it.”
