Kennett Square Halloween candy scare was hoax

Four kids are facing charges after admitting they put sewing needles in their Halloween candy and reported it to authorities, police in Kennett Square announced.

The candy scare sparked a panic in the suburban Chester County town on Sunday after three children ages 7 to 12 from the same neighborhood turned tampered candy barsover to police. Later that afternoon, a fourth child,12-years-old butfrom a differentneighborhood did the same.

They told the police that they got the candy while trick-or-treating.

The Kennett Square Police Department said Friday morning that the four were released to the custody of their parents after admitting they cooked up the story of tampered treats. They’ll be charged with filing false police reports.

Police and other experts continue to urge parents to check Halloween candy, but most reports of needles and other contaminants in candy turn out to be false.

In New Jersey, this year, a Gloucester County man admitted that his report of needles in candy bars was false, CBS Philly reported.

The website snopes.com posts a roundup of false tainted candy reports every year.
