Kolb playing with chip on shoulder this time around

The Kevin Kolb era begins anew for the Eagles. The longtime understudy to Donovan McNabb enters this weekend as the starting quarterback, the job he lost to Michael Vick due to injury, or performance, depending on whom you ask.

It’s safe to assume Kolb would have a titanic chip on his shoulder, right?

“I think you always have to have a chip on your shoulder as a QB, especially in this league and this city,” Kolb said. “If you don’t, then you’re probably in the wrong sport.”

Kolb’s play came under fire last week, when he spelled an injured Vick. With the Redskins in a 3-deep double cloud defense, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, Kolb settled for short passes and screens. That was the game plan.

“There was a couple there that we had some shots at, there, but you’ve got to be efficient playing a defense that plays you like that,” Mornhinweg said.

Kolb said he was taking what the defense gave him. He threw only two completions of 15 yards or more to wide receivers, both to Jason Avant. Kolb found DeSean Jackson just twice for 13 yards.

“Going back and watching the film, there may have been one or two that I could have been more aggressive on,” Kolb said. “As a whole, I think I had to do that and take what they give me.”
