The Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival is returning to Saunders Park Greene this Saturday, July 19. From noon to 7 p.m., the outdoor event will adorn the park with live music, local vendors, activities for kids and a selection of food trucks serving up fare.

Organized by HopePHL (formerly People’s Emergency Center and Youth Service, Inc.) The Producer’s Guild of Philadelphia, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and a committee of community members (with technical assistance from Nu Millennium Media Productions), the occasion holds free admission for all Philadelphians.

“We are very excited about this year’s Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival,” said Bernadine Hawes, HopePHL Community Development Corporation Board Chair in a statement. “It’s guaranteed to be an enjoyable day out for anyone in or near West Philadelphia on July 19.”

HopePHL (pronounced “hopeful”) was founded through an integration of two human service organizations. Its continued mission is to inspire Philadelphia’s children, youth, families and communities to thrive by providing housing, advocacy, and trauma-responsive social services designed to “promote equity, resilience, autonomy, and well-being.”

For the event this Saturday, visitors can expect art activities with Mill Creek Community Partnership, face painting, a book distribution by the West Philly Reading Captains of Read by 4th, and a Vendor Village. With the latter, guests will be able to peruse through a variety of local artisans and boutiques, or try some fare from BBQ and Soul Food trucks. A Resource Village will also be onsite to provide local community groups information about health, wellness, housing, employment services, resources for families, and more.

Entertainment-wise the Festival will also feature vocalist and pianist V. Shayne Frederick. Other performers include Ursula Rucker, Nazir Ebo, Chris Oatts and the Pretty Big Band (note, seniors can enjoy the performances in comfort under a tent with seating.)

“Celebrating the community with this festival is a high point of our calendar every year,” finishes Kathy Desmond, president of HopePHL. “We are grateful to our planning committee, partners, and sponsors for all of their support.”
