The Philadelphia Eagles may be preparing for Super Bowl LVII, but their top assistant coaches might be in the news shortly for completely other reasons.
Arizona and Indianapolis are the last two teams without head coaching positions filled. Recent announcements by both teams lead many to believe they won’t be making a decision until after the Super Bowl either.
“We said,as an Organization(Colts)?… The Coaching search would be a open-minded and a thorough process…and the final decision would be strictly based on,what is best for our Franchise’s success and best for our Fans,of Colts Nation???..Final decision coming in Days not Hours?” Colts owner Jim Irsay said Tuesday via Twitter.
The Colts and Cardinals are dragging their feet. In a way, it hurts the Eagles’ longevity no matter what they decide.
With both teams expected to make decisions on their coaching job after the Super Bowl, it leads several analysts to believe that Jonathan Gannon, Shane Steichen, or both could be the apple of the eyes of the last two teams looking for new leaders.
Steichen is considered to be a finalist for the Colts job, while the Cardinals have interviewed both Gannon and the Eagles OC over the last month. Neither team can make hirings until after the Eagles are eliminated. Although it is worth noting that Jonathan Gannon stated that he will be staying in Philadelphia, the allure of a Head Coaching role is still there and will only grow after the Super Bowl ends.
Gannon has turned around an Eagles defense that was second in football this season in total defense and first against the pass. His work with the secondary has also helped the pass rush set a new franchise record in total sacks.
Steichen on the other hand has gained major notoriety as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. Jalen Hurts has become an MVP candidate and he has play-calling experience leading one of the top offenses in football this season.
Losing Gannon or Steichen would be a major loss for the Eagles after the season but it is the way it is for the franchise.
Just like after the 2017 season, the Eagles could be looking for new coordinators as early as Monday.
