Latest news and updates on Phillies injuries

Philly Sports Network brings you the latest updates on the Phillies’ top injuries and the latest status’ from manager Rob Thomson.

Phillies Injury Updates

Bryce Harper & Kyle Schwarber

Harper and Schwarber were both placed on the injured list Friday, June 28 following injuries sustained the night prior. Prior to Friday’s game, Phillies manager Rob Thomson said both injuries were “very mild”. Prior to today’s game, Thomson provided further updates on how they are both progressing:

(Kyle’s) doing weight room and pool work right now. He may swing today, and I think they’re going to get him moving, doing a little jogging or something whether it’s inside in the pool or outside. Harp’s just weight room and pool.”

Thomson previously said that he anticipates both players to return in about 10-14 days if everything progresses well, but he did note Sunday that “If they’re healthy and we’re not putting them at further risk, then they’ll play…but we’re not going to rush, that’s for sure.”

J.T. Realmuto

Realmuto was placed on the injured list, retroactive to June 10. The Phillies catcher underwent right knee meniscectomy surgery on June 12. When he was placed on the IL, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski estimated the team would be without Realmuto for “about a month” following the his procedure. According to Thomson, Realmuto was scheduled to take dry swing and hit off a tee Friday. Today (June 30), the Phillies manager said he would “possibly” take BP in the cage today, and may do a little catching.

Thomson was asked about the plan moving forward for his star backstop prior to Sunday’s series finale vs. the Marlins:

When asked about a potential rehab stint, Thomson said “Probably not. Catching is pretty normal and you may have to backup first base, but there’s not all these weird movements.” He would later add his thoughts on the timeline for J.T.’s return: “I think for him, (I’m leaning more after the break but I’m not positive on that.”

Taijuan Walker

Walker was placed on the 15-day IL with right index finger inflammation, retroactive to June 22. Sunday, the Phillies manager provided the media with an update:

“Getting better. Every day it’s getting better. I’m not sure when hes going to get on the mound yet. He hasn’t been throwing his split I don’t think yet, even with playing catch. He’s doing some long toss and some weighted ball stuff and i think it’s helping him

Luis Ortiz

Ortiz is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery on July 11, Thomson announced prior to the game on June 29.

Ortiz left his rehab appearance with Triple-A Lehigh Valley on June 18 with forearm discomfort.

Andrew Painter

The Phillies No. 1 overall prospect went under the knife last year, receiving Tommy John surgery back on July 25, 2023. Thomson said on Saturday that Painter is throwing 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He’s currently only throwing fastballs and change-ups. The Phillies manager says simulated games may be on the table for the 21-year-old in 2024, but he will likely not appear for any of the club’s affiliates this season.
