LeSean McCoy, Eagles batter Rams in season opener

The Rams’ PA announcer called for a moment of silence before kickoff yesterday to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Eagles leading 24-13, LeSean McCoy orchestrated his own moment of silence, quieting the crowd at the Edward Jones Dome with a 49-yard run. That romp put the finishing touches on a 31-13 victory over St. Louis.

“At first, it was tough with the run game and surely it came together,” McCoy said. “Eventually, we knew it was going to hit. And sure enough, it hit the right way.”

McCoy, wearing a Superman T-shirt in the locker room, did nothing to diminish his role as the Eagles’ unofficial closer. The third-year back racked up 95 yards in the fourth.

When McCoy was informed of that stat, he asked: “Is that right? What did I finish with?”

When the response of 122 yards came back, McCoy responded, “That’s crazy.”

McCoy has scored 40 percent of his career touchdowns (15) in the fourth quarter. And six of them were in games decided by seven or fewer points. Despite the hard evidence, he wouldn’t dare declare the fourth quarter as Shady Time.

“I won’t say that,” McCoy said. “Because with this offense, with these players, any different time or any different play or quarter anybody can go. I think a lot of the new guys on this team, the first thing they say is, ‘Man, there is so much talent on this team, more than any I’ve been on.’”

But McCoy has been the one getting it done in crunch time, especially with a lead.

“That’s the idea … run the clock, run the ball,” Todd Herremans said.
