Live from London: Temple students cover the Olympics

Four students and a faculty member from the School of Media and Communication and the Center for the Arts at Temple University are currently in London, covering the Olympics for Temple television station TUTV.

Reporters Isabel Garcia and Hope Janelle Berninghausen and videographers Ryan Geffert and Jake Rasmussen have already taped segments here to supplement the stories in London. For instance, they talked to equestrians at May’s Devon Horse Show, a qualifying event for the Olympics, and with Kobe Bryant’s former coach in Lower Merion.

A production crew, including anchor Lindsay Bitner, a Temple alumna, and executive producer Matt Repino, a current student, will be based in Philadelphia. Live reports from London via Skype will supplement the pretaped segments. Stories will cover not just the games and athletes, but the experience of being in London.

The students, who get academic credit for their efforts, “will confront challenges that any young journalist will confront” covering unfolding events, says Paul Gluck, associate professor in the broadcast program and TUTV general manager. “They’ll learn what happens as shows change. I always tell students, ‘The best plan gives you the license to throw it away.'”
