A 37-year-old man has been charged with vehicular homicide and involuntary manslaughter for his alleged role in a Center City crash that killed a mother and severely injured her 8-year-old daughter, police said Thursday morning.
Dominique Murphy, who lives in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia, has also been charged with aggravated assault by vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and other offenses, according to authorities.
Information on Murphy’s legal representation was not immediately available Thursday.
Investigators believe he was behind the wheel of a car that struck a 38-year-old woman who was walking with her three kids at around 10 p.m. Tuesday in the area of 13th and Arch streets.
Authorities said officers noticed the car, described as a gray Jeep, going the wrong way on the 1400 block of John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Police followed the vehicle down 13th toward Arch, and the driver sped away after the crash, investigators said.
The mother, who suffered head injuries and multiple fractures, died Wednesday afternoon, police said. Her daughter was listed in serious condition at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia following the crash.
Two other children – girls ages 10 and 11 – were not hit by the vehicle, according to police.
The children attend McCall School in the Washington Square neighborhood, and an online fundraiser to support the family organized through the home and school association had raised more than $15,000 as of Thursday morning, with a goal of reaching $100,000.
