A man was charged Thursday with ethnic intimidation, a felony, for allegedly attacking an Asian man in Chinatown earlier this week.
James Foster, 30, of Northeast Philadelphia, was also charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment, making terroristic threats and harassment, according to court records.
He is accused of assaulting the 55-year-old victim while shouting racial slurs Tuesday night on the 300 block of N. 10th Street. Police said several witnesses called 911 to report the incident.
Officers who responded to the scene used a taser twice to apprehend him, authorities said earlier this week. The victim was not not injured, according to police.
Court documents indicate that Foster’s bail was set at 10% of $15,000.
Anxiety levels have increased in the Asian American community over reports of violence and harassment, particularly in the wake of a series of Atlanta-area shootings that left eight people dead, including six Asian women.
