Man killed, another wounded in shooting near SEPTA’s Arrott terminal

A shooting near SEPTA’s Arrott Transportation Center during the afternoon rush hour Monday left a man dead and another man injured, authorities said.

Investigators said the shots were fired just before 5 p.m. close to the Market-Frankford Line station, located in the Frankford neighborhood. Stephen Young, 33, of Philadelphia, was struck in his chest, and he died a short time later at Temple University Hospital, according to police.

The other gunshot victim, a 20-year-old man, was hospitalized with wounds to his back and leg, authorities said. He is expected to survive.

SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said the shooting occurred at street level. No one else was injured, though there were two buses in the area at the time, he added.

In addition to serving as an MFL station, several bus routes stop at Arrott, which is near the intersection of Frankford and Oxford avenues. Though not as busy as the nearby Frankford Transportation Center, the terminal still accommodates a high number of riders, particularly during peak commuting times, Busch said.

Transit police chief Charles Lawson earlier this month vowed to take “aggressive” action to target criminal activity following a series of incidents aboard SEPTA vehicles and near bus stops.

Within the span of a week, four shootings involving buses left three people dead and 12 others injured. Authorities have been investigating the possibility that two of those shootings – one that killed an Imhotep Institute Charter School student and another targeting pupils at Northeast High School – are related.
