The man charged with the 2014 killing of the father of a Brooklyn Nets player in Philadelphia has pleaded guilty,
ABC Philly reported.
Carl White reportedly pleaded guilty shortly after a jury had been selected for his trial. He has been sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison.
Wayne Ellington, Sr., the father of Brooklyn Nets player Wayne Ellington, Sr., was found on the evening of Nov. 9, 2014 in his crashed oldsmobile and with a gunshot wound to his head.
Witness testimony in White’s preliminary hearing put him right at the scene of the crime.
“Zakiah Hutchinson, who lives on the 5100 block of Marion Street, testified that she saw defendant Carl White approach Ellington’s car on the night of Nov. 9 as it drove down the street,”
Philly.com reported.
Huthinson however did not call the police fearing investigators would question her nephew, Philly.com explained.
White’s defense lawyer James Berardinelli maintained his client’s innocence and tried to cast doubt on Hutinson’s testimony.
“There are issues here as to whether this was a reliable identification,” Berardinelli explained.
White however through all that out with his confession.
“Court records revealed White had a long history of crime,” ABC reported. “He has been arrested and served time for drugs, weapons, attempted murder and other crimes dating back to 1998.”
A motive for the crime has yet to be found by the prosecution or investigators.
