Man sentenced to 14 years for Jewelers’ Row kidnapping, torture

Authorities sentenced the last of three men who were involved in the kidnapping and torture of a jewelry store worker last year, according to reports.

Khayree Gay will serve 14 years in prison, prosecutors said, after he pleaded guilty to the April 4, 2015 crime, NBC 10 reported.

According to ABC, the two other men involved in the incident, Basil Buie and Salahudin Shaheed, were previously sentenced to 15 years and 30 years in jail, respectively.

On April 4, Shaheed had recruited Buie and Gay to rob the National Watch and Diamond Exchange at 101 S 8th St. along Philadelphia’s Jeweler’s Row, ABC reported.

The three men conducted surveillance of the store and its employees from a nearby parking lot and targeted an employee as she approached her vehicle in a garage, authorities said.

Shaheed and Buie — who were wearing masks, gloves, and sunglasses — then confronted the victim and Shaheed attacked her with a taser, ABC said. The trio then kidnapped her.

The men took $800 in cash and her ring and demanded the codes to the alarm and safe at the store, NBC 10 reported. However, the victim said she did not know the codes and that’s when the men began to beat her repeatedly.

The victim was eventually thrown out from the van the men had been transporting her in and she reportedly suffered traumatic brain injury, memory loss and partial vision loss.
