Man shot on Broad Street Line train following altercation

Authorities are investigating whether a man who opened fire aboard a Broad Street Line train Saturday night was acting in self-defense when he shot another man.

The shooting occurred just before 9 p.m. inside a northbound train car at Hunting Park Station in North Philadelphia, SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said.

In the moments prior, a group of young men surrounded another rider and they appeared to physically assault him, according to Busch. The man who was being targeted pulled out a gun and fired two shots, he added.

At least one of those bullets struck a 20-year-old man in his left shoulder and flank area, police said. He was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

Busch said it was not immediately clear whether the shooting victim was part of the group or a bystander.

Officers took the shooter, described as a man in his 20s, into custody and recovered a gun. He was treated for minor injuries, SEPTA officials said. No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting as of Sunday, a PPD spokesperson told Metro.
