A 26-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly drove into multiple cars, including a pair of police cruisers, after officers found him sleeping inside a stolen vehicle early Monday in Southwest Philadelphia.
Just before 3:30 a.m., officers spotted the man asleep inside the passenger seat of a Nissan Maxima that was parked in a lot on the 6200 block of Harley Street in the Elmwood neighborhood, police said.
The sedan had been reported stolen May 14 from the 2600 block of Holbrook Street in nearby Eastwick, according to investigators.
When the man woke up, he moved to the driver’s side, started up the car and rammed into a PPD cruiser, authorities said. He is then accused of backing up into another police car and striking several unoccupied vehicles.
Police apprehended him, and he was briefly hospitalized, a PPD spokesperson told Metro. No one else was injured in the incident.
Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, with officials saying Monday that he was still going through the arrest process.
