Man wanted in connection with stabbing of mother, baby caught in Maryland

Update 8:44 p.m.:

Stephen Burton was arrested in Maryland without incident, police said Sunday night.

Original story:

In a fit of rage, a man repeatedly stabbed his wife and then plunged the knife into his baby daughter’s chest over the weekend, police said, leaving both victims clinging to life.

Police have said Stephen Burton is wanted for questioning in the stabbing early Sunday of a 37-year-old woman and her baby daughter.

The victim, identified by NBC 10 as Danecia Burton, along with 21-month-old daughter Desiree, were both listed in critical condition at city hospitals.

Witnesses told police Danecia and the baby were stabbed by her husband at their home on the 1900 block of Dallas Street in West Oak Lane just after midnight on Sunday morning. Police responded around 12:30 a.m. at which time the alleged assailant had fled.

Danecia was listed in critical condition at Einstein Hospital with “multiple stab wounds all over her body,” according to the police report, while her daughter was listed in critical condition at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children with a stab wound to the chest.

Police say Burton is believed to be driving a burgundy Honda Accord and that if he is seen, members of the public should call 911.

Danecia Burton, whose Facebook page lists her job as a teacher with the School District of Philadelphia, reportedly was also a former roller derby player with the Liberty Belles under the name “Nina Knockout.”

Her teammates posted messages on Facebook calling for anyone with information about Burton’s whereabouts to contact police.
